Samhati (Bengali: সংহতি )  means “solidarity” in Bangla.  Samhati believes in women’s solidarity.  We are a group of women helping women to empower ourselves.  Founded in 1984, Samhati is the longest-running non-profit organization of Bangladeshi women in the United States.   Samhati’s mission is to initiate, implement, and support small projects that improve the social and economic conditions of poor and otherwise disadvantaged women and children in Bangladesh.

All of Samhati’s programs are open to people of all faiths.  Samhati does not support programs that are affiliated with any religious groups.

OUR STORY

Samhati is an organization of and for Bangladeshi women founded in 1984 by Bangladeshi women living in the Washington D.C. area. For many years, Samhati worked with Mahila Parishad (the largest women’s organization in Bangladesh) to build, establish and support the first women’s shelter in Bangladesh, called Rokeya Shadan, for which Samhati has provided a total of over $160,000. Rokeya Shadan is located in Dhaka, the capital, and continues to provide shelter and assistance to women of various backgrounds. During the last several years, Samhati has focused its efforts on transforming entire villages by providing income generating opportunities through adult literacy classes, functional and vocational education and training, leadership building, and services and classes to improve sanitation and health.  All our projects support ecological sustainability.  Samhati believes that assisting and empowering women results in improving the conditions of children, families, and the entire community.   Our projects are woman-focused for this reason.

Samhati believes small well-supervised projects can result in tangible improvements to a community.  Since 2000, Samhati has concentrated its resources on the creation of eco-empowerment projects for poor rural women in three areas of Bangladesh:  Katakhali Village in  Patuakhali District; Hatianda Village in Natore District; and Bathgari, Charani, and Laksmichap Union in Rangpur District.  Our projects focus on women’s literacy, training women for leadership and income generating activities, health services and education, and scholarships for middle and high school children.

Samhati is an all-volunteer organization.   Accordingly, we have negligible overhead costs and are able to direct at least 90% of your contributions to the needy women and families in Bangladesh.  Samhati receives no government funding and relies almost exclusively on personal contributions.  The projects Samhati supports have no religious affiliation and are available to poor women of all faiths.

সংহতি নারীদের একতাবদ্ধ হযে কাজ করায় বিশাস করি । আমরা একটি নারী সংগঠন এবং আমরা নারীর ক্ষমতায়নের জন্য নিজেরাই নিজেদের সাহয্য করছি । ১৯৮৪ সালে সংহতি গঠিত হয় । সংহতি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে বাংলাদেশী নারীদের প্রথম অলাভজনক সংগঠন । দুস্থ ও সুভিধাবন্চিত নারী এবং শিশুদের অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিক অবস্থার উন্নয়ন সংহতির ব্রত । এই ব্রত বাস্তবায়নের জন্য সংহতি ছোট ছোট প্রকল্প তৈরী করে এবং অর্থায়ন করে এই প্রকল্প গুলি বাস্থবায়িত করে ।

সংহতির কর্মসূচী সকল ধর্মাবলম্বিদের জন্য উন্মুক্ত । বিশেষ ধর্ম সম্প্রদায়ের সঙ্গে সংযুক্ত কোন সংস্থার কর্মসূচীকে সংহতি সমর্থন দান করে না ।

আমাদের কথা :

১৯৮৪ সালে ওয়াশিংটন ডি সি এলাকায় বসবাসরত প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশী মহিলারা সংহতি গঠন করেন । গত কয়েক বছর যাবত সংহতি গ্রামাঞ্চলের নারীদের উপার্জন বৃদ্ধির উদ্দেশে বয়স্ক শিক্ষা ও সাক্ষরতা প্রশিক্ষণ , বাস্তবসম্মত ও পেশামূলক প্রশিক্ষণ , স্থানীয় পর্যায়ে নেতৃত্ব গঠন এবং সাস্থ সেবা ও স্বাস্থ্য ব্যবস্থা উন্নয়নের প্রচেষ্টায় নিয়োজিত আছে । আমাদের সকল প্রকল্প পরিবেশবান্ধব এবং টেকসই উন্নয়ন ভিত্তিক । সংহতি বিশাস করে নারীর ক্ষমতায়নের দ্বারাই পরিবার ও শিশু তথা সমগ্র সমাজের উন্ননয়ন ঘটে । এইজন্যই আমাদের প্রকল্পগুলি নারিভিত্তিক । সংহতি মনে করে সুপরিকল্পিত ছোট প্রকল্পগুলিকে নিবিড় তত্ত্বাবধায়নের মাধ্যমে বাস্তবায়িত করা হলে সমাজের প্রকিত উন্নয়ন করা যাবে । সেইজন্য ২০০০ সাল থেকে সংহতি বাংলাদেশের তিনটি পশ্চাদপদ পল্লী অঞ্চলে নারীদের জন্য পরিবেশ বান্ধব ক্ষমতায়ন প্রকল্প পরিচালনা করছে : পটুয়াখালী জেলার কাঠাখালী গ্রাম, নাটোর জেলার হাতিয়ান্দহ এবং রংপুর জেলার বাথগারী সরণী এবং লক্ষীচাপ ইউনিয়ন । আমাদের প্রকল্পের মূল লক্ষ হচ্ছে : বয়স্ক নারীদের মৌলিক শিক্ষা, নারীদের নেতৃত্ব গঠন এবং আয় বৃদ্ধির জন্য পেশামূলক প্রশিক্ষণ , সাস্থসেবা ও সাস্থবিধান শিক্ষা এবং মাধ্যমিক ও উচ্চ মাধমিক ছাত্র-ছাত্রীর জন্য শিক্ষা বৃত্তি ।

সংহতি পুরোপুরি একটি স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংগঠন । আমাদের সংগঠন চালানোর খরচ অতি সামান্য এবং আমাদের সংগৃহীত তহবিলের শতকরা ৯৭ ভাগ আমরা বাংলাদেশের দুঃস্থ নারী ও তাদের পরিবারের কল্যাণের জন্য বিনিযোগ করি । সংহতি কোনো সরকারি অনুদান পায় না । আমরা সম্পূর্ণভাবে ব্যক্তিগত অনুদানের উপর নির্ভরশীল ।
